Rossion Automative Rossion Q1 Production Model Available Soon, Very Soon

Rosson Q1 - Front

The Rossion Q1 will offer a great balance of form and function with racing inspired design and performance but with road car creature comforts. The suggested drive chain provides 450 bhp and 400 ft. lbs. of torque in a mid-mounted engine. The frame itself is only 2500 lbs which results in an impressive power to weight ratio.

The Q1 does 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds and runs a 11.4 quarter mile with a top speed of 185 mph. The chassis costs $69,000 (US). Including drivetrain brings the completed cost to $90,700 (US). Orders started being accepted in July of 2007 with deliveries commencing imminently.

Ariel Atom 500 V8 - You Thought The Atom 3 Was Fast?

Ariel Atom 500 - Front

Looking like a cross-between a go-cart on steroids and a modified Formula1 racer, the Ariel Atom will deliver thrilling and nauseating performance. With 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds, you can be sure that beer runs to the 7eleven in back can be completed most expeditously. There is even a passenger seat to put your libations... Or your mother-in-law if you never want to see her again.

At 10,000rpm the Atom's supercharged engine provides over 500HP in a car that weighs around 1100 pounds. These two numbers give it one of the highest power to weight ratio of any production vehicle ever made.

2009 Maserati GranTurismo S

2009 Maserati GranTurismo S

First premiered at the 2008 Geneva International Motorshow, the Maserati GranTurismo S is the company's new halo model. Packed with a 440 bhp 4.7-liter V8, this high-performance car now sits at the top of the Maserati power lineup. Torque is pegged at 360 lb-ft with a top speed of 183 mph.

The other item of note is the MC-Shift electro-actuated gearbox which can be put in either manual mode, for sporty performance, or automatic for a more laid-back drive. The transmission has 6 gears plus reverse. MC-Shift allows for lightning quick gear changes of only 40ms. Available only on upshifts above 5,500 rmp when the accelerator is at 80% opening.

MANSORY Renovatio – The Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren Transformed

Mansory Renovatio

Like a beautiful butterfly emerging from its cocoon, the Mansory Renovatio is a true sight of wonder. But in this trite and contrived metaphor, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is no caterpillar. Mansory takes an already exquisite vehicle and makes it truly exceptional. The 5.5 litre V8 from the SLR is bumped up from 626 hp to 700 hp making the car 2/10 tenths faster.

Aerodynamic enhancements are crafted from carbon components and include a body kit with a front apron, rear apron and side skirts. The Mansory exhaust system provides flush mounted pipes located on the sides between the front tires and doors. A special wheel set, staggered with 20x9s in front and 20x12.5s in back, is mated with Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tires.

Zohaib Zenvo ST1 - Supercharged and Turbocharged to 1104 bhp

Danish Zenvo ST1 (Source: Zenvo Automotive)

Hand-built in Denmark, the Zenvo ST1 is a rear-wheel drive supercar with high aspirations. The design of the vehicle is just as edgy and impressive as the performance specs. The engine takes the form of a 7 liter V8 that is both turbocharged and supercharged to 1104 bhp. A 6-speed manual with a hydraulic slip differential provides a solid transmission.

The Zenvo ST1 is electronically capped at 233 mph and will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds (initial testing). Traction seems to be the main limiting factor. Because of this, an extra wide set of staggered wheels is matched with the drivetrain. In the front, 19" x 9.5" rims are wrapped in 255/35/19s Michelins tires. In the rear, there are 20" x 12.5" wheels in massive 335/30/20 rubber.

2009 Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Stirling Moss

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss (Source: Mercedes-Benz)

Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new supercar that is a direct tribute to the original 300 SLR raced by the legendary Stirling Moss in the 50s. The 2009 Stirling Moss not only loses the roof but the windshield and windows as well. Similar in many ways to the original, the exhaust pipes sit just behind the front fenders, rollover bars are present and the usual SLR headlamps are swapped out for single ovoid units. Even the audio system and navigation get thown out. The Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss will make it's debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

The engine supplied is the same one from the SLR McLaren 722. The 5.4-liter V8 puts out 650-hp, which pushes the car from 0 to 62 in 3.5 seconds. It has a top speed of 217 mph. As with other SLRs, extensive carbon fiber bodywork keeps the weight down. In case you need to make a quick deceleration from speeds above 75 mph, a retractable air brake can be deployed.

Honda Sportbike Powered Hodge Hawk Trike

Hodge Hawk Concept

What do you get when you take a cutting edge designer, a Honda RC51 motorcycle and a 3 wheel chasis? The Hodge Hawk! Innovator Alex Hodge in New Zealand has created a conceptual design of a new high-performance trike with 120 bhp, 10,000 rpm engine powering a fiberclass shell and allow chasis.

Top speed is estimated at 145 mpd. Braking comes in the form of disc-brakes in front and two sets fitted on the single rear wheel. Speaking of wheels, you also would get a set of lightweight allow rims to give your ride a little edge. No details on whether or not the Hodge Hawk will ever be produced but it's most definitely cool.

Pagani Zonda R Makes Its Official Debut in Vienna

Pagani Zonda R

Created at the strong behest of an Italo-American customer who was already the proud owner of 3 (yes 3) Zondas, the latest iteration from Pagani is a track only variant without limitations. The wheelbase and length were increased and additional body work tweaked for maxumum aerodynamics and downforce. Extended front bonnets with flaps, a sealed underbody as well as an adjustable rear wing and diffuser all aid in this regard. The Pagani Zonda R not a street legal vehicle.

Zonda tapped Mercedes-Benz AMG to procure the class leading engine from the CLK GTR, which puts out 750 hp and 524 lb-ft of torque. Specs list the car at a top speed of 248 mph and a 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds. A carbon-fiber high-performance intake is located on the front end, pulling air in and pushing it out an F1 inspired exhaust in the rear. A six-speed manual sequential synchronised gearbox is installed for aggressive driving.

Etkin Dogan is a very talented graphic designer from Turkey whose work I came across several months ago. He does an amazing job of taking some of today's hottest cars and adding aerodynamic tweaks, accessorization and customization that really take them to the next level. His work has a nice balance of form and function and is often radical but never over the top.

Over the coming months, we will feature his artistic car renderings here at Sub5zero. Below is the same image of the Nissan 370z with Etkin's inspirations shown in the highlight boxes. Click either image to enlarge:

Maxximus G-Force is Now the World's Fastest Street Legal Car

Maxximus G-Force with Kirby & McMahan

The Maxximus G-Force has been given the designation of the world's fastest street-legal car. What does it take to be have the World Record Academy give you it's special stamp? In this case, a 1600 horsepower engine, sitting in a 2700 pound body, throws the car from stop to 60 mph in 2.1 seconds. In fact, this vehicle will perform 0 to 100 mph in the same amount of time it takes a BMW M6 to perform 0 to 60 mph - about 4.5 seconds. The engine that performs this feat is a mid-mounted twin turbocharged Chevy V8 engine. With all that power, the gearbox had to be adjusted accordingly. A specially crafted 3 speed transmission operated by paddle shifters was created to handle this task. In order to bring this monster to a stop, 14.2 inch 6-piston AP Racing calipers are engaged.

2010 Toyota Supra Cancelled? The Return of a Legend is Uncertain

Toyota FT-HS Concept

It looks like the return of the venerable Toyota Supra is not going to happen any time soon. It's been reported that the car has been dropped from the company's lineup due to high mile per gallon requirements. There was a lot of hope that the resurrected form of the Supra would bear considerable likeness to the Toyota FT-HS concept that was first unveiled at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. The car was designed by Calty Design Research and there was a common belief that the Future Toyota Hybrid Sport (FT-HS) would fit nicely in the vacant Supra slot.

2009 Geneva Motor Show - Koenigsegg CCX and CCXR

2009 Koenigsegg CCX

Swedish car manufacturer Koenigsegg first showcased the CCX Edition back at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show to extensive fanfare. Fast forward three years and the Koenigsegg CCX Edition is back again with additional tweaks and technology upgrades. The car's 4.7-liter twin-supercharged V8 is capable of producing 888 hp at 7000 rpm with a top speed estimated at 259 mph.

The Koenigsegg CCXR Edition is the company's contribution to the green movement. The car can run on E85 biofuel, E100 ethanol fuel or standard octane. Surprisingly or unsurprisingly enough (depending on your understanding of biofuel), when running on E85, the CCXR puts out a whopping 1018 bhp versus 806 bhp on regular gas.

2009 Geneva Motor Show: Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce Official Release

Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce

Automobili Lamborghini has done it again. The hits just keep coming and coming. The new Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce is top of class. The LP 670-4 SV is more powerful, lighter and faster than the LP-640, which is spectacular in its own right. This new iteration of the Murc line has a 6.5-liter V12 capable of 670 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. The 30 hp increase in engine output comes from tweaked valve timing for better optimization and a new intake system. 0-62 mph takes a mere 3.2 seconds. The Superveloce comes with a sequential, automated manual transmission, code named e-gear, that shifts super fast using electro-hydraulics.

Top speed is rated at 212 mph with the standard small rear spoiler. An optional "Aeropack Wing" that is much larger provides additional downforce for better handling but the additional drag makes the car 3 mph slower. I know, a real bummer.

2010 Lotus Evora Product Content and Packaging Released

2010 Lotus Evora

Every now and then I feel compelled to quote homer Simpson. I can hear his voice in my head screaming "It's here! It's here! It's here!" Well almost at least... The 2010 Lotus Evora will be delivered to European consumers in May of this year. Interestingly enough, the company was able to move from design to production in a tightly abbreviated 27 months. The bonded aluminum chassis are already starting to roll down the assembly line in Worcester UK with output being slowly increased to a target of 34 finished cars a week by July. Finishing touches are applied at the company's factory in Hethel.

California Banning Black Cars?

Novitec Rosso Ferrari F430

Ok, so the title is a little misleading... And I wish this was a bad April's Fools Day joke, but alas, it is not. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has its sights set on the underpowered and overworked climate control systems of dark colored cars. In its recent public workshop CARB made a presentation entitled Cool Cars Standards and Test Procedures. As we all know, the darker the color, the more heat that a car attracts.

2009 New York Auto Show - 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Unveiled

2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

A couple weeks ago we posted an article about Brabus beating AMG to the punch in tuning the new Mercedes-Benz E550. Now, AMG has come back over the top with the unexpected. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG packs a 6.3-liter V8 engine putting out 518 hp with 465 lb-ft of torque. This makes it capable of a 4.4 second 0 to 60 mph time. The new AMG bests the Brabus version by 56 hp and .3 seconds in the sprint to 60 mph. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (but an extra AMG option allows it to run up to 186 mph.)

2009 Formula DRIFT Streets of Long Beach - Main Event

2009 Formula DRIFT Streets of Long Beach

For those who are not yet hip, drifting is taking motorsports by storm. Just like the UFC came out of nowhere to rival the sport of boxing, Formula DRIFT may soon start stepping on NASCAR's toes. As with the UFC, mixed martial arts add dimensions that are not found in boxing such as kicking, grappling and submissions. In the same way, drifting is much more dynamic than oval track racing with powerslides, extreme cornering and style showmanship. Drifting got its roots about 15 years ago in Japan where it is now firmly established and celebrated as the country's #1 motor sport. The D1 Grand Prix is its premier drifting league.

First Drive: 2009 Volvo C30 R-Design Hatchback

2009 Volvo C30 R-Design

The Volvo C30 is aimed squarely at first time Volvo buyers and the young, hipster crowd. Since I'm both young and hip (or so I like to think) and found the car to be pure joy to drive, I would have to say that Volvo definitely has done things right. It may appear that the C30 is a big departure from Volvo's typically boxy sedans, but the 2 door, 4 seat, front wheel drive hatchback is actually an updated version of the Volvo 480 that was popular in Europe in the mid 80's and early 90's.

The vehicle that we were provided was the 2009 Volvo C30 R-Design, the company's more sport and performance oriented variant. The R-Design has an assortment of both internal and external enhancements that separate it from its tamer brethren. Volvo's R-Design packages are available for their C30, S40 and V50 models and provide customers with an oppotunity to personalize and accessorize their vehicles. We would very much like to see this line extended to include performance modifications such as those offered by Toyota's TRD line and Mercedes' AMG division.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Remixed By Fab Design and Dubbed 'Desire'

Fab Design SLR Desire

FAB Design is a small tuning shop operating out of Switzerland that focuses on aftermarket modifications for the Mercedes-Benz product lineup. They offer aero kits, wheels, suspension and brake systems as well as engine tuning. They have now put their performance and design know-how to the test by modifying the top dog, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. But despite its dainty name -- FAB Design SLR Desire -- this is a mean car which is anything but delicate and demure. Horsepower has been boosted from 626 hp to 750 hp which puts it in the 3.6 second range for 0 to 62 mph sprint with a top speed of 196 mph. FAB design has limited production to 15 units, and since its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, all have been scooped up.

More power equals more aerodynamic tweaks. The FAB Design SLR Desire has a carbon body that rivals the technology and engineering put into F1 as well as the space program. A custom front end with a revised apron and reshaped hood give it a new look. The side skirting has been changed along with flared fenders to add significant width. The exhaust pipes have the same exit point on the sides, but now number three instead of just two. The backside of the car is the most radical adjustment we've seen to date. A new massive diffuser and rear wing spoiler serve to reduce lift force and increase downforce working in tandem. FAB Design's own sports suspension was installed along with the addition of the company's 20" wheels with Michellin 265/30ZR20 tires in front and 325/25/ZR20 tires in rear. Inside, black FAB Design leather is upholstered throughout with red stitching and croco-style seats.

2009 Auto Shanghai - New Mercedes-Benz S63 and S65 AMG Debut in China

2010 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG

The top S-Class models from Mercedes, the S63 and S65 AMG, made their official debut at the 2009 Shanghai Motor Show. For those geographically challenged, that is in China, an emerging market that more and more automakers are targeting. There is nothing groundbreaking with the new models but the refresh is both noticeable and noteworthy. Some cool technological enhancements are found in the Active Body Control system which provides cross-wind stabilization, the Torque Vectoring Brake system that applies the brakes to the inner rear wheels for precise cornering and the Direct-steer system for responsive handling.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG features the Company's 6.3-liter V8 engine which is good for 525 hp and a 0 to 62 mph time of 4.6 seconds. The S65 AMG offers a 6.0-liter V12 engine putting out 612 hp and an insane 738 lb-ft of torque, which leads me to believe that they will soon begin developing thrusters for the Space Shuttle. This allows the car to perform 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds. Both engines are very close to the previous year's but provide a 3% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emmisions. Hey, you gotta start somewhere. Both models are electronically limited to 155 mph and feature automatic SPEEDSHIFT transmissions (7-speed for the S63 and 5-speed for the S65) with steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters.

The Storied Chevy Corvette Grand Sport Makes Its Return for 2010

2010 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport

The last time we saw a Grand Sport production model was in 1996, when Chevy commemorated the original Corvette racers from the 1960s and closed out the C4 era. The original Grand Sports were designed by Zora Arkus-Duntov as race-ready production models. However, GM put the smackdown due to agreements to remain out of manufacturer-backed motorsports programs. The original production run of 125 that was originally planned never happened, but 5 prototypes of the 1963 Grand Sport Corvette were actually manufactured. These vehicles resembled production models but were hand-built race cars that differed quite significantly from their publicly offered brethren and were used by private racers with close ties to Duntov's engineering group. Now, at the 12th annual C5/C6 Corvette Birthday Bash at the National Corvette Museum (that really exists?), Chevrolet is announcing the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport.

Digital Photography Highlight - Lamborghini Gallardo

Lamborghini Gallardo by Maurice Lim Wan Xiong

Over the last few years there has been an influx of stellar automotive digital photography. The manufacturers have always put out very polished images but these are usually pretty conservative and often uninteresting. Lately, there have been alot of photos from up-and-coming photographers that maintain crisp and detailed views of the cars but put them against engaging backdrops with amazing lighting and effects. From this point forward, whenever we come across cool digital imagery we will pass it along... Stay tuned for more over the coming weeks and months. These images of the Lamborghini Gallardo were provided by Maurice Lim Wan Xiong, a photographer in Malaysia, whose images should be gracing magazine covers...
